Worth taking the time to walk out to this site of historic interest. From the car park at the Lochan it takes about 15 minutes to walk to. The path is part track, path & trail, be aware there are some short steep sections & some uneven rough terrain under foot. Follow the signs & the black & white marker posts out to the Cairn.
The cairn of Get is easily accessible from the A9 with good parking. Not far inland from the popular whaligeo steps it's only a short detour to this wonderfully preserved Neolithic chambered burial cairn. Huge stones protrude from the ground forming the doorway and the cairn is built to enclose a small area with the roof missing. A wooden walkway provides good access on foot to the site and interpretation panels give more detail and stories of the mythical Heather ale brewed nearby. The intrepid explorer may want to venture further into this area to explore the several brochs on the ridge or Garrywhin hillfort a few hundred meters away overlooking loch Watenan below. Furthermore inland is also the stunning Yarrows archeaological trail on the other side of the hill. Probably the best area in Caithness for discovering ancient forgotten ruins and prehistory.
